In my talk, I will present the recent progress on the developments of highly efficient and highly stable white OLEDs in 6” size for lighting applications. White OLEDs fabricated with fluorescent blue – phosphorescent orange hybrid structure in a single emissive layer exhibit a power efficiency of 67 lm/W, which already reached the efficiency of fluorescent lamps. We will also demonstrate a new tandem and hybrid white OLED, which consist of a charge generation layer (~50 nm in thickness) sandwiched between two electroluminescent (EL) units. The first EL unit is composed of a fluorescent blue emitter, and the second EL unit phosphorescent red and green emitters forming a hybrid device together. This tandem and hybrid approach would lead to a high efficiency and an enhanced lifetime due to the combined use of a stable fluorescent blue and longlived phosphorescent green and red dopants. Through this new device concept, we have achieved a power efficiency of 28 lm/W (@ a luminance of 1500 cd/m2)and a lifetime of 240,000 hours (@ an initial brightness of 400 cd/m2). Therefore, the fabricated white OLED will represent a viable replacement lamp in terms of efficiency and performance for the common incandescent and fluorescent lamps. I will also talk about our recently developed high-efficiency transparent OLED light sources for intelligent lightings for home, offices and automobiles. The devices consist of transparent electrodes (~10 – 30 nm in thickness) and extremely thin and transparent encapsulation technology for dual-side illumination. Such OLEDs will open up novel applications such as partitions that are invisible by day but capable of providing a pleasant diffused light at night, i.e. at night the transparent OLED attached to the window will take over the natural light to provide illumination.
