Carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene, which are classes of low-dimensional nanomaterials made of sp2 nanocarbon building blocks, possess a unique combination of physical and chemical properties. Both are among the most frequently investigated nanomaterials in the past decade, and yet both continue to offer exciting opportunities for the discovery of new science and applications. This talk will focus on our recent work on the biomedical applications of CNT and graphene, especially in biosensing, tissue engineering, and drug delivery. Our efforts are divided into two parts. One is to seek better understanding of fundamentals, such as the sensing mechanisms of CNT based biosensors, the effects of fibrous and sheet nanostructures in tissue scaffolds on cell behavior and phenotype, and the effects of CNT nanocarrier size on cell targeting and intracellular trafficking. The other is to develop reproducible and cost-effective platforms to bridge the gap between proof-of-concept experiments and real-world applications.
