The convergence between neuroscience and nano/micro-technologies is particularly emphasized as an extremely promising approach toward substantial discoveries in brain research and as a technology foundation for future development of therapeutics for various complex neurological diseases. In this talk, the speaker will discuss the development of engineered system at multiple scales for neuroscience research, and also show how such neurotechnologies could be extended to form high-throughput screening platforms for discovery of novel chemicals or materials that functionally modulate different neural processes, such as gene delivery, synaptogenesis, and neural network dynamics.
Dr. Shi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. He obtained his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Wuhan University (China), Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University. He completed his postdoctoral work at MIT in Electrical Engineering and Biological Engineering, where he was a Simons postdoctoral fellow. Since October 2011, he has been a faculty member of CityU’s MBE department. His lab's focuses on the design, fabrication, and use of advanced micro/nano biosystems for (1) high-throughput drug/genetic screening technologies, (2) Interaction between novel materials and neural systems, (3) neural network engineering at different scales from single cell, tissue level to whole animal. His work has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), University Grant Council of Hong Kong (UGC) and Innovation and Technology Commission of Hong Kong (ITC).
