SU 'Materials Science' Enters the Top 10 in Mainland China

According to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database released on May 10, 2019, the ‘Materials Science’ discipline of Soochow University (SU) now rose to No. 39 in the world and No. 9 in mainland China.

The global rankings of SU ‘Materials Science’ have moved up dramatically in the past decade. This rise started with the founding of our institute, the Institute of Functional Nano & Soft Materials (FUNSOM), which opened a new chapter in the development of Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Electronics, Biology, Medicine, and corresponding interdisciplines of SU.



FUNSOM is led by its founding director, Prof. Shuit-Tong Lee, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). At present there are 41 principal investigators conducting cutting-edge research in nano-science and technology, including nano-optoelectronics, nano-energy, nano-biotechnology, and nanoscale interface sciences. To date FUNSOM has received over 650M RMB ($94M) in competitive national funding from NSFC, MOST and other national agencies. According to 2018 Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate Analytics, 5 professors from SU are named in the field of ‘Materials Science’, including 3 professors and 1 former Ph.D. student from FUNSOM.
